Anonymous Attack US Government Over SOPA

Megaupload, one of the largest file-sharing websites on the web was taken down today by the US government in an attempt to crack down on internet piracy and copyright infringement. If there’s one thing that annoys Anonymous, its the denial of open information. In retaliation to the move by the US Government, Anonymous decided to take some serious action.
This afternoon, amidst the Tweets about #SOPA, the offical Anonymous account on Twitter announced “The government takes down #Megaupload? 15 minutes later #Anonymous takes down government & record label sites. #ExpectUs.” Among the sites attack by the hacktivists were Universal Music, RIAA (Record Industry), MPAA (Movie Industry), Department of Justice, and more recently Whitehouse.gov. Some of these sites remain shut off to some users, suggesting that the web servers are being restored slowly to prevent further attacks such as DDOS attacks that Anonymous have become famous for.
The hacktivist movement seems to be growing largely with Anonymous announcing a record breaking participation of 5,635 hosts. The next target claimed by the hackers is the FBI’s website they stated earlier, continuing… “Get some popcorn… it’s going to be a long lulzy night.”
